Bonsucro

To ensure a solid and consistent approach to sustainability

The company has established a development plan in collaboration with local communities to implement the “Bonsucro” project— an international standard for sustainable sugarcane and sugar production created through the cooperation of academics, sugarcane farmers, and the private sector. Bonsucro is a non-profit organization that works to establish sustainable production standards that support economic, social, and environmental well-being. The Bonsucro Standard serves as a unified framework for the sustainable management of sugarcane and sugar production and is built upon the following core principles:

01Sugarcane and sugar production must be carried out in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
02Sugarcane and sugar production must respect human rights and adhere to fair labor standards.
03Sugarcane and sugar production must ensure efficient management of raw materials and production processes to support sustainable development.
04Sugarcane and sugar production must include the protection and management of biodiversity and ecosystems.
05Sugarcane and sugar production must be committed to continuous business improvement.

These five principles

cover the entire sugarcane and sugar production chain and require a system that ensures full traceability from start to finish, beginning from

Verification of land legality before sugarcane cultivation

Processes during the sugarcane growing period

Sugarcane maintenance and crop management

Harvesting and transportation of sugarcane

Sugar production processes within the mill

Sugar trading and transactions

The assessment will be carried out by an evaluation team appointed by Bonsucro.

If any of the key indicators fail to meet the required criteria, the mill will be considered non-compliant and will not receive Bonsucro certification. The key indicators include:

  • Sugarcane cultivation areas must not be located in forest zones, including national parks, conservation forests, protected forests, or wetlands.

  • Sugarcane cultivation areas must have legally valid land ownership or lease documentation.

  • Water usage, both in sugarcane cultivation and within the mill, must comply with regulations and be supported by valid water-use permits.

  • Child labor must not be used in any part of the sugarcane or sugar production process.

  • Labor age must be regulated: hazardous work requires workers to be at least 18 years old, while non-hazardous work requires workers to be at least 15 years old.

  • Forced labor is strictly prohibited.

  • There must be no discrimination based on gender, skin color, or ethnicity.

  • Employers must provide workers with sufficient clean drinking water for consumption throughout the day.

  • Employers must provide appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) according to the nature of the work.

  • Employers must provide first-aid equipment for workers in case of accidents.

  • Agricultural workers (sugarcane planting, maintenance, and harvesting) must be informed of and agree to the wage rate before beginning work (written documentation is strongly recommended).

  • The total use of agricultural chemicals in sugarcane fields must not exceed 800 grams of active ingredients per rai per year.

  • Prohibited chemicals must not be used in sugarcane fields, such as Furadan, etc.
